Ladies Night Out is a casual, drop-in event of friendly neighbors and good food. Every other month, the women of VNA host a relaxed, fun get together to see old friends, meet new friends and enjoy good company. Vineville Neighborhood Association

The Vineville Neighborhood Association is an active organization open to all residents of the Vineville Historic District and to anyone interested in the preservation of the area as an economic and social asset of Macon. Founded in 1978, the VNA was responsible for collecting the necessary data on neighborhood homes for consideration as an historic district by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Register of Historic Places. The neighborhood achieved this status in 1980.

Our association covers an area that stretches roughly from the Georgia Academy for the Blind on Vineville Avenue to I-75 and from the Midtown Kroger on Pio Nono Avenue to Ingleside Avenue. Elected board members reside in and represent all areas of the neighborhood. Committee volunteers dedicate time, interest, and effort into outreach and social activities.
Currently, the VNA has several objectives:

-To welcome new residents to the neighborhood and make them feel included
-To protect the integrity of the neighborhood and ensure it is a safe and wonderful place to live
-To host social activities to allow neighbors to get to know each other and build a sense of community
-To publish a bimonthly newsletter to inform members about current neighborhood issues, initiatives, and upcoming events
-To promote the Vineville Historic District area as a special place to live in Macon

Neighborhood Cleanup

The most recent Neighborhood Cleanup was held on Saturday June 5, 2010, meeting at the Vineville Baptist Church parking lot at the corner of Vineville and Pierce avenues with participants spreading out to work in all needed directions to cleanup the corners Vineville, Pierce and Pio Nono avenues.
.
On cleanup days please bring rakes, brooms, gloves, trash bags, trimmers, other yard tools, and some well-honed elbow grease. We look forward to seeing you!

*And, oh yes! - keep in mind that many a late Saturday morning, after everyone has had a rowsing, character building, stress relieving effort of community pride and camaraderie, the neighborhood cleanup "First Saturday Club" participants have been known to reconvene at a nearby neighbor's home, banded together in the fading morning hours, rejuvenated and reconstituted as the "Set Your Spirits Free Pre-Noon Belters Club," a post power hour happy hour of appreciation and gratitiude for everyone's well-disciplined efforts.

Neighborhood Cleanup Days take place on the first Saturday of each month. Please join us! It's always a good workout, great fellowship with neighbors and a wonderful positive service to the neighborhood. Items always needed include rakes, shovels, trimmmers, edgers, brooms, trash bags, etc. Wear your yellow VNA T-Shirt if you have one. Hope to see you there!

Yard Sale

Each year members of the Vineville Neighborhood Association collectively donate and host a neighborhood yard sale as a fundraiser for the association. This is a wonderful way to share those items no longer needed in your household, put them to good use for others, and find good deals for yourself on furniture, clothes, office equipment, books, household goods, and collectibles.

Please be thinking ahead about items you can donate for next year's 2011 yard sale to support the association.

Summer Party

Summer Pool/Garden Party

Each Summer an outdoor Garden/Pool Party is organized and hosted at the home of one of the association members. For the past several years VNA has been fortunate to have Steve and Florence Allen host this wonderful event at their home at 2448 Delaware Avenue.

Beverages and meat are provided by VNA, while members are asked to bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. This party has become a summer favorite with children of all ages enjoying the pool (including some rather grown-up children) and adults enjoying conversation, beverages and good food on the the patio and in the yard. This is a child and family friendly gathering and is thoroughly enjoyed by all who attend.

Spring Fling Party

The annual Spring Fling event was a St. Patrick's Day Party, held on Saturday, March 20, 2010 from 6:30 - 10:00 PM at 274 Buford Place, the home of Kim and Dan Zachman. Great craic was had by all. Divil a one was effin' and blindin' nor loopers or locked.

VNA provided traditional corned beef and beverages and VNA members brought side dishes to share.

This was an event for the whole family. Children welcome.

A Spring Fling Party is organized and hosted in March, April or May of each year at one of the association member's homes. VNA furnishes all meat and beverages, while members are asked to please bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. Members are encouraged to come enjoy the festivities and bring a new neighbor with you if you can. Please plan for a baby-sitter for this event and come have some fun!

Easter Egg Hunt

The VNA Easter Egg Hunt was held on Saturday April 3, 2010 from10:00 to 11:30 AM at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer (Pierce & Ingleside)

VNA provided the Easter Egg Hunt complete with refreshments and a visit from the Easter Bunny! Children of all ages came out for neighborhood fun and got to pose for pictures with the Easter bunny.

Each Spring an Easter Egg Hunt with a visit from the Easter Bunny is planned and organized within the neighborhood to permit children and families an opportunity to celebrate this fun tradition. The younger children have their own area to search ensuring opportunities for all to be successful, while the trail blazing older children are provided a much larger berth to roam and collect.

Oktoberfest Party

Oktoberfest was celebrated on Sat. Oct. 24, 2009 from 7-10 pm at 163 Rogers Ave., home of Lars and Annette Anderson. This was an event the whole family enjoyed!

Each Fall an Oktoberfest party is organized and hosted at the home of one of the association members. For the past several years VNA has been fortunate to have Lars and Annette Anderson host this wonderful event.

Beverages and bratwurst are provided by VNA, while members are asked to bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share. This party has become an Autumn classic and is thoroughly enjoyed by all who attend. Polka dancing is not required, but may be contagious. This is a child and family friendly gathering.

What does membership bring to you? Membership is open to anyone who lives in the Historic Vineville District and to anyone interested in the preservation of this area. We’re more than an organization, we're a family. New members are embraced by the organization, invited to parties and gatherings, allowing them to feel a part of the community. Friendships are forged, business alliances are built, and lasting benefits are reaped by all. New residents are supplied with welcome packets and information about the historic community into which they have moved.

We're a great group for parties and get-togethers. We meet numerous times throughout the year at barbecues, pool parties, holiday gatherings, and more. We also work together to ensure the neighborhood and its surroundings are properly represented in local politics and key initiatives. We strive to ensure education, safety, and that neighborhood preservation is upheld and constantly improved.

Committees / Chairs

Communications (Christy Joynt) – Assists with various aspects of preparing and mailing the bimonthly Historic Vineville Gazette newsletter. Help is needed from writing articles to putting on labels.

Home of the Month (Jim Weldon) – Selects a monthly home to feature in the newsletter and on the web site based on the appearance of the house and yard. Takes photos and write articles about the monthly selection.

Membership (Nancy Van Etten) — Maintains the VNA membership database and all aspects of membership from collection of dues to identifying new residents and preparing and distributintg welcome packets to new neighbors.

Neighborhood Cleanup (Kim Zachman) – Plans and implements a cleanup in a different area of Vineville the first Saturday of each month. Publicizes the cleanup in the newsletter and on the web site. Creates and distributes a flyer to residents in the area where the cleanup will be held to encourage their participation and to solicit new VNA memberships.

Properties (Ron Lemon) – Monitors the Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission and Historic Design Review Board hearings so that any items of concern to the Vineville Neighborhood are addressed. Also handles issues such as property code violations and safety issues.

Social (Susan Griffin) – Plans and implements social events throughout the year. Help also is needed to take photos of events for the newsletter and the web site and to create and handle the printing and mailing of postcards to VNA members about events.

Web Site (Neil McArthur) - Maintains the VNA web site.

Yard Sale (Paula Haralson & Leslie Willingham) – Plans and implements the VNA’s main fundraiser for the year. Help is needed to help pick up yard sale items, get donations of new items from Ingleside Avenue merchants, handle publicity, price items, lineup volunteers to work the day of the sale, handle refreshments for sale at yard sale and for volunteers and to pick up and return tables for the yard sale.

Annual Membership Meeting

The VNA Annual Membership Meeting and Covered Dish Dinner takes place during January or February each year to combine good food and fellowship with the election of new officers and board members.

After visiting with neighbors over dinner, the annual meeting is conducted by the outgoing president, followed by the election of new officers and board members. Afterwards, those in attendance are often asked to write down issues they would like to see addressed in the coming year so the new board can establish priorities.

Association members are encouraged to sign up and particpate on one of the committees in the coming year to help ensure the success of all association events and activities. Participation builds a connection to our community, fosters neighborly spirit, and provides a sense of satisfaction through time and effort well spent. It is good to remember that board officers, board members and committee members provide their time and effort on a purely voluntary basis.

Holiday Party

The VNA Annual Holiday Party was held on Friday, December 18, 2009 this past year and was organized as a progressive event. The party kicked off at 163 Rogers Avenue with the main dish, followed afterwards by desserts and music at 192 Rogers. Members were asked to bring an appetizer, side dish or dessert to share, while VNA provided the main dish and beverages. Thanks to Lars and Annette Anderson, Susan Griffin and Paul McClellan for opening up their homes for this adults only event.

This year, on Saturday, December 5, 2009 Santa will visit the beautiful home of Al and Sue Bond at 2319 Clayton Avenue from 10:00-11:30 AM. Thanks to Al and Sue for opening their home and providing a lovely setting for families and children of the neighborhood to visit with Santa. Don't forget to bring your camera!

Each year Santa makes a stop at the Vineville Historic District to visit with the friendly families and children of the neighborhood and enjoy the charm and comfort of one of the beautiful neighborhood homes.

The Macon-Bibb County Planning and Zoning Commission provides Design Guidelines for Historic Districts in Macon-Bibb County. Being aware of and following the guidelines and regulations when making renovations to your property will help maintain the architectural heritage of the structures in our district.
